Katsuo
About This Spot
Stepping into Katsuo feels like entering a well-worn story of convivial evenings and easy camaraderie tucked amidst the vibrant hum of Shinjuku’s Nishishinjuku district. The space carries a warmly dimmed glow, inviting you to slow down and settle into the rhythm of a true izakaya where the pace is comfortably unhurried yet lively enough to keep the energy flowing. It’s the kind of place where the chatter rises naturally from clinking glasses and the shared joy of good company.
The atmosphere hums with approachable familiarity — a little rough around the edges, with cushioned seats that promise comfort over extended conversations and toast after toast. Here, people gather not just to eat, but to escape the rush of the city, savoring moments that unfold gently between bites and sips.
Katsuo is at once a neighborhood treasure and a lively spot for a casual night out, whether you’re dropping in after work or planning an intimate gathering. The menu effortlessly balances deep-rooted Japanese comfort with playful indulgence: plates arrive hot and generous, designed for sharing and sustaining long conversations. Crowning the experience is the legendary “momo karaage” — succulent fried chicken that's more than just a dish; it’s an invitation to savor one bite after another, especially when paired with a crisp highball or draft beer. Side dishes like vibrant edamame and lightly charred teppanyaki vegetables offer refreshing accents, while the option of all-you-can-eat fried chicken adds a joyful spontaneity to the meal.
Ordering here flows smoothly — often from the convenience of your phone — letting the food and drink arrive swiftly without fuss, perfectly suited to a place that values good timing and social warmth over formality. Whether you’re seated for a quiet dinner or a small party, Katsuo’s blend of casual comfort and flavorful fare makes it distinctively welcoming — a spot that feels less like a restaurant and more like a shared local ritual.

Nice Japanese restaurant also near from shinjuku station.

I would consider this place more of like a “bar food” place where people order small meals to eat while they get some drinks in. Service is really quick are you just order with your phone so it comes out super quickly. I ordered the mustard and mentaiko karaage (fried chicken) and I liked them both but personally enjoyed the mustard one more. Definitely would say to go here if your looking to have some food in your system while you got some drinks in (drinks are really cheap here) before you start your night out in Shinjuku!

The food is excellent and I was served promptly. Food portions are large and I was very full after. The place is a little dark and dusty, but the seats are decently cushioned and atmosphere is relaxed.
